Most people get ready with a resume, nice clothes, and references, but they forget to prepare the most important thing – their thoughts.
When an employer interviews you, they see the resume, your references and your appearance as important criteria. But the most important thing to the interviewer is YOU.
And they don’t want to hear you drone on about how great you are. They want to know how well you might do at the job they need to fill.
The best way to show them you’re a great fit for the position is to prepare your thoughts in a way that will demonstrate your fit, rather than you telling them what a good fit you are (which comes across as bragging).
How can you prepare your thoughts?
Read all you can find on the Internet about the employer and the interviewer, especially as it relates to the position. Read their company website, search the Internet for their company name, read job descriptions they’ve posted, read public articles and reports about the company, and look at the employee’s profiles on LinkedIn.
Take what you learn, and find a way to bring it up in the interview and show interest in it.
Example:
Interviewers always ask if you have any questions. If you ask about their vacation policy, it will seem like you’re just focused on taking time off. But imagine if you say, “I heard your company is offering a new product line soon. What kind of challenges has that presented for you?” This shows you’re interested in the company and its goals, you’re smart enough to do some research and you’re not just focused on yourself. You will win the job, before the person who just asks about the vacation policy, even if they have slightly better skills than you.
One time I was sitting in an interview room waiting for a job interview and I noticed some books on a nearby bookshelf. I happened to notice that one of the books was even written by the man who was about to interview me. I grabbed the book and skimmed through it briefly and put it back. Later, when he asked me if I had any questions, I mentioned one of his concepts about doing business and asked him to explain it to me. He was extremely surprised that I knew anything about that, and very pleased that I was showing an interest in his strategies. Later, I got the job, and I worked there for many years and made good money. I often think that reading that book at the last minute may have made the difference in me getting the job.

But if you want to be the person who wins the job, rather than just another candidate on the list, prepare your thoughts in advance. Learn about the employer and bring it up in the interview.
